HMA provide safer truck loading

HMA Material Handling Division recently commissioned the upgrade of the Xstrata West Wallsend ROM coal truck loading facility near Newcastle. This upgrade provides a safer environment in which to load trucks reducing the risk on cabin engulfment during the loading process.  The project was taken on a Turnkey basis with HMA providing all project management, design, procurement , installation and commissioning
Using our in-house developed and unique double gate design additional protection is able to be given to the truck cabins when entering the loading position. This new design was able to be fitted with in the same envelope as the original loading gate meaning no changes were required to the trucks being used.  A specially developed control system monitors all facets of the process and includes many safety interlocks and loops to ensure additional safety. These lead to a design that was able to effectively comply the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements and those of the industry regulators
Key to the project was the planning and discussions held with all the stakeholders including drivers, maintenance, operations and management to ensure all had a chance to contribute and enabling the project is be completed on time and with normal plant shut downs.
